The Other Half
"The
Other Half"
In May of 1997 I was awarded a major arts development
grant from
Creative New Zealand to produce new work.
"The Other Half"
The work of this project draws from my personal medical records and related
materials collected over a 22 year period from the 25th of June 1977 when
I was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident where I sustained multiple
facial and head injuries and partial loss of sight in my right eye. Following
this accident I underwent many neurosurgical, ophthalmological and plastic
surgical operations involving many months in hospital.
This is my "Medical MyStory".
The critical and defining element of this work is the way it has been constructed. The process used in the developing and printing of the work is unique. This process was part of my initial idea for the work and I have refined it and now able to control it.
The unique element in all the prints in the Other Half is that they contain my genetic material. By adding genetic material at various stages of the developing and printing phase of production I have significantly changed the alchemy of traditional photography. The work is unique in content and in the manner of production.
